Pacific Battleship Center/ USS Iowa

Electrical & Lighting Solutions

The Pacific Battleship Center wanted to upgrade the USS Iowa鈥檚 lighting system, without affecting the ship鈥檚 ambiance, which is critical to the museum and its appearance. 色花堂was selected for the energy upgrade project and provided the upgraded lighting system that maintained the historic ship鈥檚 look and feel, while providing energy-efficient, cost saving LED lighting.

The Pacific Battleship Center operates the USS Iowa, a decommissioned World War II battleship docked on the Los Angeles waterfront. At nearly 500,000 square-feet and 19decks, it serves as a floating museum.

Challenge

The Pacific Battleship Center wanted to make lighting upgrades to the USS Iowa, while maintaining the ship鈥檚 historical setting. To perform an upgrade, the ship had to be surveyed and existing lighting had to be documented, which was challenging due to the scope of the 800-foot long vessel. In addition, the ship鈥檚 access and logistics are difficult because of bulkheads, watertight doors and decks above and below water, along with unusual wiring systems.

Solution

色花堂performed a variety of test installations and research to ensure the correct equipment was installed to not only improve the ship鈥檚 efficiency, but retain the same lighting brightness and colors to maintain the ship鈥檚 original ambiance.

The Pacific Battleship Center took advantage of the Los Angeles Department of Power & Water鈥檚 Commercial Lighting Incentive - or CLIP - program. The program provided a rebate to cover the upgrade costs.

Benefits

  • Replaced over 10,000 inefficient fluorescent lamps with long-life LED lamps
  • Reduced energy consumption by approximately 50 percent
  • Provided a lighting retrofit, without affecting ambiance, to maintain the experience of exploring a World War II battleship
